Our Mission
To empower creators, organizations, businesses, and communities to inform, inspire, educate, and connect — giving every voice the access, training, and platform it needs to be heard across Houston and beyond.
For over 40 years, HMS has empowered community voices through access to media, education, production, storytelling, and civic engagement. Today, HMS is evolving into a global community media ecosystem rooted in Houston and connected to the world.
HMS began roughly four decades ago as public access television — a place where any Houston resident could walk in, learn to use a camera, and earn airtime to tell their own story. Long before anyone carried a studio in their pocket, HMS handed the tools of media to the people.
Over the years that simple promise grew into a trusted community institution. Generations of producers, students, nonprofits, and neighborhood leaders have passed through our doors, and the stories they made became a living record of Houston itself.
To empower creators, organizations, businesses, and communities to inform, inspire, educate, and connect — giving every voice the access, training, and platform it needs to be heard across Houston and beyond.
A community-owned global media ecosystem where every voice can reach the world — where storytelling is shared infrastructure, owned by the people it serves and open to every culture and generation.
We tell the truth and protect the trust communities place in us, on and off the air.
Every culture, language, and neighborhood has a place and a platform at HMS.
We pair four decades of craft with new tools to reach audiences everywhere.
We show up for civic life — connecting residents to the decisions that shape their city.
Community media should look and sound as good as the stories it carries.
HMS is community-owned — owned by the neighborhoods, cultures, and generations it serves. We answer to the people of Houston, not to advertisers or shareholders. Here, diversity is the foundation, not an afterthought; it is the very reason HMS exists and the source of its strength.
Whether you want to produce, learn, sponsor, or simply be seen — there is a place for you in the next forty years of Houston Media Source.
